Excited to get into this game but concerned at amount of money needed as all the good ships are in the thousands of dollars!
I see the cheapest ship is about $20, what can you actually do with a $20 ship?
Can you earn money from that?

We use cash to make more cash. We have to really team up and invest as a group. For now, i am loading more polis. But if we really want to succeed as a group, then the leaders of the group should inform us how we are going to obtain some of those expensive ships and accessories that would help us make good returns

Its basically in the interest of StarAtlas to make sure that
a) ships are affordable so that anyone can play, and this is why $20 dollar ships shall still return some profits.
b) provide for non-custody scholarship/lending system where anyone can “lend” a ship of great value for either a monthly rent or a profit share. both options are in the works as far as I know, they may not be released together with the mini-games, but factions are also working on solutions to let everyone participate in the game.
